If you’re looking to organise a private visit to a garden, whether it be for a local group or for friends and family, a By Arrangement can provide something a little different. In Yorkshire there’s a range of gardens available for private By Arrangement visits, find out more below.

90 Bents Road, Sheffield

Plantswoman’s north east facing garden with many unusual species. Patio with alpine troughs for year-round interest and pots of colourful tropical plants in summer. Large conservatory with exotic plants. Mixed borders surround a lawn which leads to a second patio and mature trees underplanted with shade-loving plants. Many examples of maximum impact with minimal maintenance. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 27 July to 3 August.

Birstwith Hall, Harrogate

Charming and varied four acre garden nestling in secluded Yorkshire dale. Formal garden and ornamental orchard, extensive lawns leading to picturesque stream and large pond. Walled garden and Victorian greenhouse. Opens for By Arrangement visits from June to 15 July for groups of between 10 and 50.

Bramble Croft, Silsden

Bramble Croft’s small hidden hillside artist’s garden full of colour and texture and includes perennials, ferns, climbers, grasses and sculptures, lies on the edge of Silsden village. Wildlife encouraged with ponds, bird and insect boxes. Original paintings are on show and for sale in the new tranquil garden room. Terrace and outdoor covered dining patio. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to 20 September.

Bridge House, Elvington

Two acre garden carved out of the River Derwent’s floodplain 40 yrs ago. It survives annual winter flooding of the river which can last up to many months. Formal rose garden, mixed borders, shrubbery, large pond surrounded by hostas and ferns. Productive kitchen garden and orchard. Various devices in kitchen garden used to keep above water level. Groups may book a talk about flooding with garden tour. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 22 May to 22 July for groups of between 5 and 40.

3 Church Walk, Bugthorpe

Created in 2000, this garden has surprisingly mature trees and borders amalgamated in a quirky way to give depth and intrigue. The owners have developed a keen interest in growing from seed, resulting in plants for sale. Recently acquired old oak stump made into a table. Plenty of seating to appreciate the views. Opens for By Arrangement visits for groups of between 10 and 20.

The Circles Garden, nr Wakefield

An organic and self-sustaining plantswoman’s ½ acre garden on gently sloping site overlooking fields, woods and nature reserve opposite. Designed and maintained by owner. Herbaceous, bulb and shrub plantings linked by grass and gravel paths, woodland area with mature trees, meadows, fernery, greenhouse, fruit trees, viewing terrace with pots. About 100 hellebores propagated from owner’s own plants. Opens for By Arrangement visits from April to September for groups of between 5 and 20.

Devonshire Mill, Pocklington

Drifts of double snowdrops, hellebores and ferns surround the historic Grade II listed watermill (not open). Explore the two acre garden with mill stream, orchards, woodland, herbaceous borders, hen run and greenhouses. The old mill pond is now a vegetable garden with raised beds and polytunnel. Over the past 30 yrs the owners have developed the garden on organic principles to encourage wildlife. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 2 February to August.

Fawley House, nr Brough

Tiered, 2½ acre formal garden with lawns, mature trees, hedging, gravel pathways. Lavender beds, mixed shrub and hot double herbaceous borders. Apple espaliers, pears, soft fruit, produce and herb gardens. Terrace with pergola and vines. Sunken garden with white border. Further woodland area with naturalistic planting and spring bulbs. Quaker well, stream and spring with three bridges, ferns and hellebores near mill stream. Snowdrops and aconites early in year. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 10 February to 27 June for groups of between 12 and 50.

Fern House, 5 Wold Road, Driffield

Designed and developed by owners since 2019. This small garden feels spacious with over 50 varieties of fern amongst many other plants. Mixed planting in quirky containers, up trellises and walls. A pond, a living wall and 2 greenhouses, one entirely full of ferns and the other of house plants. Seats to view different aspects of a constantly evolving garden. Opens for By Arrangement visits from June to 7 September.

Fernleigh, Sheffield

Plantswoman’s ⅓ acre cottage style suburban garden. Large variety of unusual plants set in different areas provide year-round interest. Several seats to view different aspects of garden. Auricula theatre, patio, gazebo and greenhouse. Miniature log cabin with living roof and cobbled area with unusual plants in pots. Sempervivum, alpine displays, collection of Epimedium and wildlife hotel. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 16 April to 14 August for groups of between 10 and 30.

Firby Hall, Firby

The Hall sits in 4 acres with a walled garden to the north and 2 lakes to the south, the largest of which features a folly. The walled garden and greenhouse were restored in 2019. The main garden continues to undergo renovation: the ha-ha was restored during the 2020 lockdown as were the 110m long herbaceous beds. Ongoing work is now focused on the main west facing lawns. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 30 May to 27 September for groups of between 12 and 20.

Galehouse Barn, Selby

The Barn: A plantaholic’s informal cottage garden, created in 2015, to encourage birds and insects. Raised beds with tranquil seating area. The Farm: South facing, partly shaded varied herbaceous border. North facing exposed shaded border redeveloped 2017, ongoing for spring and autumn interest. Small experimental white garden. Raised beds for vegetables. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to 21 September for groups of between 5 and 15.

The Grange, Skipton

Over four acres of wonderfully varied garden set in the grounds of Victorian house (not open) with mature trees and panoramic views towards The Gateway to the Dales. The garden has been restored and expanded by the owners over the past three decades. Bountiful herbaceous borders with many unusual species, rose walk, parterre, mini-meadows and water features. Opens for By Arrangement visits from July to August for groups of 20+.

Greencroft, Ripon

½ acre country garden with long herbaceous borders packed with colourful late summer perennials, annuals and exotics. Circular garden with views through to large wildlife pond and surrounding countryside. Ornamental features inc gazebo, temple pavilions, formal pool, stone wall with mullions, gate to pergola and a water cascade. Opens for By Arrangement visits from July to August.

138 Greystones Road, Sheffield

This typical, small suburban plot has been developed into a lovely garden over 20 yrs. It features many trees and acers combined with stunning late tender perennials inc banana plants, Ricinus, Canna, Agapanthus, Colocasia and dahlias. Several sculptures created by the owner are displayed amongst the plants. The garden has a tropical feel with splashes of colour, mainly orange and purple. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 4 August to 28 September.

33 Heights Drive, Huddersfield

Situated on a Pennine hillside is a quirky garden overlooking the Colne Valley. The plot has been carefully designed with a flower arranger’s eye and offers many handmade bespoke features. The meandering paths draw the visitor’s eye around the garden, within a wide range of different room settings. The garden has a range of modern and quirky twists, with a wonderful nod to tradition. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 5 May to 28 September for groups of 15+.

High Dalby House, Pickering

Set in the heart of Dalby Forest, the garden comprises over six acres of a mix of woodland, small lake, wild areas, a cherry orchard, Labyrinth, formal borders including a RHS Tatton award- winning border. Newly-developed unique Trinity Garden with lively beck running through, crossing bridges and surrounding specimen trees. There are many places to sit, reflect and enjoy its variety. Opens for By Arrangement visits all year round.

Highfield Cottage, Driffield

A ¾ acre suburban garden bordered by mature trees and a stream. Structure provided by numerous yew and box topiary featuring a pergola and sculptures. Lawns with island beds, a small orchard and a fern and hosta area. The garden has been changed since joining the National Garden Scheme to create more distinctive areas and is slowly moving to white planting to provide contrast to the topiary. Opens for By Arrangement visits for groups of 10+.

The Jungle Garden, Sheffield

Not a traditional garden, but a fascinating mature space of specialist interest using mainly hardy exotics creating a jungle effect. Long (250ft) narrow site, densely planted with mature trees and shrubs inc many Trachycarpus, European fan palms, large bamboos, several tree ferns, mature Eucalyptus and a number of species of mature Scheffleras. The planting has a South East Asian theme. Opens for By Arrangement visits from July to 18 October.

The Manor, Birkby

C18 manor (not open) former rectory to adjacent church. 2½ acre gardens surrounded by mature trees. Extensive lawns, croquet lawn, mixed shrub and flower borders. Current owners have added new features –specimen trees, glasshouse, planned rose gazebo, and an elliptical shaped orchard with corten steel planters for flowers and vegetables. Meandering woodland path with curiosities for the observant. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 8 April to 30 July for groups of between 10 and 25.

Mansion Cottage, Bridlington

A truly hidden, private and secret garden with exuberant, packed, vibrant borders. Visitors’ book says ‘a veritable oasis’, ‘the garden is inspirational’, with a surprise around every corner. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 25 May to 3 August for groups of between 10 and 40.

Marton cum Grafton Gardens, Marton cum Grafton

Two gardens in two adjacent rural villages within walking distance of each other. In Marton, Orchard House is a contemporary village garden with an abundance of features inc gravel garden, raised beds and extensive views across alpaca paddock. Well House in Grafton nestles under the hillside. A traditional English cottage garden with herbaceous borders, climbing roses and ornamental shrubs with a variety of interesting species. Paths meander through the borders to an orchard with chickens. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to June for groups of between 10 and 30.

115 Millhouses Lane, Sheffield

Plantswoman’s ⅓ acre south facing level cottage style garden with many choice and unusual perennials and bulbs, providing year-round colour and interest. Large collection of 60+ hostas, roses, peonies, iris and clematis with many tender and exotic plants inc aeoniums, echeverias, aloes, bananas and echiums. Seating areas around the garden. Many home-propagated plants for sale. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to August for groups of up to 30.

The Nursery, York

A former suburban commercial nursery, now an attractive and productive one acre organic, private garden. Over 100 fruit trees, many in trained form. Many different vegetables grown both outside and under cover in 20 metres greenhouse. Productive areas interspersed with informal ornamental plantings and cut flower areas to provide colour and habitat for wildlife. Opens for By Arrangement visits from June to August for groups of 10+.

The Old Priory, Everingham

Two acre rural garden. Created in 1990s to enable self-sufficiency in vegetables, meat, most fruit, logs and timber. Walled vegetable garden, polytunnel and greenhouse. Borders planted to cope with sandy loam. Garden slopes down to natural bog garden. Dove tree, variegated tulip tree and various willows. Roughly mown pathway through woodland, along ponds, lake and lightly grazed pasture. Plenty wild flora and fauna. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 11 May to June.

The Old Rectory, Beverley

Approx three acres of garden and paddock. The garden is particularly attractive from early spring until mid summer. Notable for aconites, snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and bluebells. Later hostas, irises, lilies and roses. There is a small wildlife pond with all the usual residents inc grass snakes. Well established trees and shrubs, with new trees planted when required. Opens for By Arrangement visitsnull to 30 May for groups of up to 10.

The Old Vicarage, Whixley

The walls, house and various structures within this village garden are festooned with climbers. Mixed borders, old roses, hardy and half-hardy perennials, topiary, bulbs and many hellebores give interest all year. Gravel and old brick paths lead to hidden seating areas creating the atmosphere of a romantic English garden. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to 1 July.

The Orchard, Leeds

⅓ acre plantswoman’s hidden oasis. A wrap around garden of differing levels made by owners using stone found on site, planted for year-round interest. Extensive rockery, unusual fruit tree arbour, oriental style seating area and tea house, linked by grass paths, lawns and steps. Mixed perennials, hostas, ferns, shrubs, bulbs and pots amongst paved and pebbled areas. Opens for By Arrangement visits for June and July for groups of 10+.

Pilmoor Cottages, nr Helperby

A year-round garden for rail enthusiasts and garden visitors alike. A ride on the 7¼’ gauge railway runs through two acres of gardens and gives you the opportunity to view the garden from a different perspective. The journey takes you across water, through a little woodland area, past flower filled borders, and through a tunnel behind the rockery and water cascade. 1½ acre wildflower meadow and pond. Opens for By Arrangement visits all year round.

The Poplars, Newton upon Derwent

A plant lover’s paradise. Over 100 different trees and shrubs around a Victorian house and barns provide structure and shelter for a succession of flowers through the seasons. Glasshouses full of tender plants that spill out into the gardens in summer. Meadow walk leads to two acre arboretum with over 200 woody species around a wildlife pond. Ceramic sculptures. Opens for By Arrangement visits from June to 10 August for groups of between 10 and 40.

Prospect House, Harrogate

One acre walled garden with mixed herbaceous borders, ornamental pond and cutting garden beds. New planting and landscaping since 2019. Colour-themed borders, ‘hot’ border, physic bed, woodland area. Also mature hedging, trees and seasonal interest throughout. A renovated outhouse converted into a pretty potting area used for garden workshops. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to August for groups of 10+.

Rewela Cottage, Skewsby

Situated in a lovely quiet country village, Rewela Cottage was designed from an empty paddock, to be a labour saving, shade garden, using unusual trees and shrubs for year-round interest. Their foliage, bark and berries enhance the well-designed structure of the garden. The garden owner now specialises in growing and selling Hostas. Over 750 varieties of Hostas in the garden. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 12 May to August for groups of 10+.

The Ridings, Driffield

Secluded cottage garden with colour-themed borders surrounding neat lawns. Grass and paved paths lead to formal and informal areas through rose and clematis covered pergolas and arbours. Box hedging defines well-stocked borders with roses, herbaceous plants and trees. Seating in sun and shade offers vistas and views. Greenhouse and summerhouse. Terrace with water feature. Indoor model railway. Opens for By Arrangement visits from April to July.

Scape Lodge, Golcar

⅓ acre contemporary country garden at 1000ft in the Pennines on a steeply sloping site with far-reaching views. Gravel paths lead between mixed borders on many levels. Colour-themed informal planting sits comfortably in the landscape and gives year-round interest. Steps lead to a terraced kitchen and cutting garden. Gazebo, pond, shade garden, large collection of pots and tender plants. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 5 May to 31st May.

Skipwith Hall, Selby

4 acre walled garden of Queen Anne house. Mixture of historic formal gardens, some designed by Cecil Pinsent (worked largely in Italy in 1st half of the C20) and informal planting for wildlife. Woodland with variety of specimen trees and meadows woven to create a woodmeadow. No-dig kitchen garden with maze and pool, Italian garden, gravel garden, many roses. Orchard with trained fruit on walls. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 26 May to June for groups of between 10 and 50.

Southwood Hall, Cottingham

Explore 1½ acres of secluded grounds surrounding this historic property. Spot the Alice in Wonderland sculptures in the Secret Walled Garden around a dipping pool and fountain. Enjoy teas in the formal front garden and parterre. View extensive driveway flower beds. Meander through the orchard, pottering garden, greenhouse and raised beds and marvel at the extensive composting area. Gardens are being continually developed. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to 14 September for groups of 10+.

Wressle Brickyard Farm, Newsholme

One acre garden with EW&B standard gauge railway and 1930s station. Formal garden with lawns, mature trees, borders and pots of summer colour. Old orchard leads to fountain garden. Two large natural ponds, bog garden and mature trees inc weeping copper, beech and spindle. Bandstand, polytunnel and greenhouse for fruit/vegetable and species geraniums.
