The tranquil Flower Garden of C18 poet William Cowper, who said ‘Gardening was of all employments, that in which I succeeded best’, has plants introduced prior to his death in 1800, many mentioned in his writings. The Summerhouse Garden with Cowper’s ‘verse manufactory’, now a Victorian Kitchen Garden, has new and heritage vegetables organically grown, also a herb border and medicinal plant bed. Opens Saturday 8th June and Sunday 9th June.
The gardens at Danesfield were completed in 1901 by Robert Hudson, the Sunlight Soap magnate who built the house. Since the house opened as a hotel in 1991, the gardens have been admired by several thousand guests each yr. However, in 2009 it was discovered that the gardens contained outstanding examples of pulhamite in both the formal gardens and the waterfall areas. Opens Wednesday 7th August, pre-booking essential.
A restored walled kitchen garden with vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers as the centre piece of this 40 acre estate. The surrounding waterway is bordered by a wildflower meadow, attracting heron, egret and kingfisher. Historical landscaped garden laid out between 1680-1730 for the poet Edmund Waller and his descendants. Features 300 yr old cloud formation yew hedges, formal lake and vistas ending with classical buildings and statues. Wooded walks around the grove offer respite from the heat on sunny days. At least four gardens will open in the delightful Misbourne chalk stream valley, and Wind in the Willows also opens separately in March. The 3 smaller gardens and one 3 acre garden each have a very different character. Opens Sunday 26th May.
Opened in Sept 2018, Horatio’s Garden at the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital is designed by Joe Swift. The fully accessible garden for patients with spinal injuries has been part funded by the NGS. The beautiful space is cleverly designed to bring the sights, sounds and scents of nature into the heart of the NHS. Opens Saturday 28th September.
Howe Farm Flowers is a flower farm located in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside. We have one main cutting field, approx an acre in size, which is dedicated to our weddings, events and wholesale. We also have a ¼ acre cut flower garden where we welcome our PYO flowers visitors, and two large polytunnels. We use the no dig method and avoid using chemicals and pesticides. Described by visitors as ‘a real gardener’s garden’, we are a fairly new 1½ acre garden set around a Grade II listed former brickmaker’s cottage (not open), with borders packed full of perennials, a meadow and small orchard that’s a haven for wildlife, with over 20 different types of butterfly spotted in 2023. A garden of almost 3 acres made from a rough field over 25 yrs ago. Near the house (not open) a series of terraces cut into the sloping site create the formal garden with long and cross vistas, lawns and deep borders. A 2 acre garden containing drifts of common snowdrops as well as a few unusual ones. Strong structure provided by terracing, walls and topiarised yew hedging. Your visit will start with a short illustrated talk about snowdrop varieties before you explore the snowdrops lining a shrubbery path, woodland path and rockery. Naturalised snowdrops also line the lawn on either side of the driveway. The visit will end with tea and cakes. The Walled Garden at Wormsley Estate is a 2 acre garden providing flowers, vegetables and tranquil contemplative space for the family. For many yrs the garden was neglected until Sir Paul Getty purchased the estate in the mid 1980s. In 1991 the garden was redesigned and has changed over the yrs, but remains true to the original brief. Opens Wednesday 19th June, pre-booking essential.
