Orange and Clove Pomanders

Infuse your home with the scent of Christmas with these easy to make orange and clove pomanders. Choose between covering the whole orange in cloves or create patterns or names, add ribbons of different colours and loops to hang them from your Christmas tree or add to larger decorations or wreaths. (For wreaths you could use small fruit like clementines). Or simply place one or more in each room and let the scent lift your Christmas spirit!

What you need:

Whole cloves (we bought a big bag on line – much more cost-effective than buying the small bottles from supermarkets)

Fresh oranges

Festive ribbon or string

Pins to help secure the ribbon

Method

  1. Take an orange and decide what design to create. If you want to have ribbons or string add it first and secure to the fruit either by tying tightly or using pins. In our example one glass head pin did the job but if you’re hanging them make sure everything is secure – you could add a few stitches or glue to keep things secure.
  2. Start to push the whole cloves into the skin of the orange (enjoy the wonderful perfume of orange and clove as you go!) using the first few to keep the ribbon in place before adding the remaining cloves.
  3. For the stars we first drew the design onto the orange – you could add any design, a name or concentric circles of cloves – the choice is yours.
