About Broughton Castle

The garden at Broughton Castle is on the island surrounded by the 3 acre moat. It consists of a number of long mixed shrub, rose and herbaceous borders together with a walled formal garden.

The border known as the battlement border is based on a colour scheme of yellow & blue & grey: the shrub roses included are R. Maigold, R. Golden Wings, R. Windrush, R. Sanders White. Other shrubs are Rhus, Hypericum, Philadelphus, Potentillas, Berberis and Corlyus.

The herbaceous plants include Campanulas, Aconitums, Yellow Kniphofias, Scabious & Salvias. The west border has pink and red roses – particularly R. Fritz Nobis, R. Fantin Latour, R. Rubifolia, R. Fran Dagmar Hastrup, R. China Blush, together with Deutzias, Tree Paeonies, Philadelphus and herbaceous plants.

The walled garden is formal with fleur-de-lys beds planted with Rose Grass an Aachen and Rose Heritage. The round beds are planted with lavender: all are surrounded by clipped box hedges. The East and South borders include Rose Penelope, Rose Pink Grotendorst, Rose Mme Hardy together with Agapanthus, hebes, Phlomis, Romneyas and many others.
