About Gardd y Coleg
This garden is managed by the Village Committee and has been designed and created by volunteers. Various successful grant applications enabled the Committee to purchase the land and to pay contractors to carry out specialised work such as constructing an environmentally friendly parking area (recycled plastic filled with soil and sown with grass seeds). The necessary match funding for the grants was met by volunteer labour, each hour of which was recorded and given a monetary value.
The volunteers, including children and young people from the community, transformed a flat, ½-acre field into a beautifully landscaped garden. The wide footpaths, suitable for wheelchairs and prams, lead visitors around raised beds which have been planted to give interest throughout the year and include a variety of evergreen plants.
The spring mass of bright yellow daffodils give way to the colourful cottage garden plants that bloom throughout the summer months, followed by autumn foliage and berries and then on to the striking red stems of the dogwood and rich ruby fruit of the skimmia in winter. The plants have been carefully chosen to suit the elevated position of the site. The garden is located approximately 800 feet above sea level, enabling visitors to enjoy spectacular views of Caernarfon Bay, from the mountains at the gateway to the Lleyn Peninsula known as the Rivals, along the cost to Caernarfon and its castle and across to Anglesey. On certain clear days the Irish Wicklow mountains can also be seen.
