Hillcroft

The garden is part of a five acre site on the lower slopes of Wapley Hill in the beautiful Lugg Valley. The highlight in mid summer is the romantic Rose Walk, featured on Gardeners' World in 2023. It combines over sixty roses with mixed herbaceous planting set in an old cider apple orchard. In addition to the garden around the house, there is a secret garden, wildflower meadow and a vegetable area.

About Hillcroft

The 16 yr old garden was designed to sit within the natural landscape. We love to enjoy the surrounding scenery of the Lugg Valley and so there are no garden rooms except for the Secret Garden, which was an already separate area when we arrived, although completely overgrown. Much of the 5 acre site was open pasture with an old apple orchard. The orchard seemed the perfect setting for the romantic rose garden Liz had always dreamed of. Planted with a mixture of old ramblers and climbers, together with many English roses, it reaches its glorious climax in June. In addition there are pergolas planted with wisteria and clematis, many mature shrubs and trees, mixed beds that are colour themed, a prairie bed, a wild flower meadow, a pond, a new fruit orchard and a large vegetable area. The garden will never have a manicured finish. We try to manage the cultivated areas with the wilder parts to achieve harmonious transitions, with varying success, but the garden is still a work in progress, as are all gardens. 2024 will be our last year of opening for the NGS, having shared it with many visitors over the years, one of whom described it as ‘a genuine country garden, gentle and comfortable’

Additional refreshments information: Tea, coffee and cold drinks along with delicious home-made cakes can be enjoyed in the garden or the conservatory
