Marksbury Avenue Gardens

Although of similar size, these five neighbouring gardens in Kew are all very different. At No.26 you will find many New Zealand natives. Fruit trees abound with plums, figs, apple, red and black currents, apricots, mulberry, feijoa, loquat and citrus, alongside a delicate chamomile lawn. Over the road at No. 59 the garden has evolved largely through own propagation and self-seeding. Shade is provided from a variety of ornamental trees which lead to a lower patio and small vegetable patch. No. 60 is a typical town garden where visitors can enjoy a fine display of patio roses, flowering shrubs and climbers inc numerous varieties of clematis displayed around a curved lawn. Next door at No. 62 is a family garden, created from scratch in 2018 with a brick edged lawn and yew topiary cones for structure. No.65 is an even newer garden designed in 2021 with symmetrical lines softened by old favourites plus contemporary grasses, cercis and canas.

About Marksbury Avenue Gardens

No. 62 is a New Zealand themed garden featuring many native trees and shrubs in a
very shady setting. Contrastingly, the hot, sunny driveway is full of pots with vegetables and flowers, leading round to a dining area surrounded by more potted specimens. A vine laden pergola leads through to a hidden tranquil lawn, with pathways leading off to a beautiful pond with newts, frogs, toads and fish, and another peaceful secluded dining area. Towards the back of the plot there is a sweep of purple beech and black bamboo concealing the furthest area of the garden. Fruit trees abound with plums, figs, apple, red and black currents, apricots, & citrus, alongside a delicate chamomile lawn.

No. 59 has evolved largely through own propagation and self-seeding. Shade is created from a variety of ornamental trees which then leads through several concealed areas to a lower patio and on to a small vegetable patch. Plants are for sale in the alleyway beside the house.

Across the road at No. 60 you will find a typical town garden with curved granite-set boarders and a central lawn. Beds are filled with flowering shrubs, including hydrangeas, skimmia and four varieties of patio roses. Herbaceous plants abound while the boundary fencing is covered with trachelospermum, pyracantha, jasmine Stephanense and a solla hetrophylia as well as numerous varieties of clematis which tumble over a pergola and several obelisks. Three olive trees, a weigelia and 4 potted Golden Crookstem bamboos contribute to privacy. A new addition is a small willow wand set in the lawn. A family garden created from scratch in 2018,

No. 62 has a brick-edged lawn and yew topiary cones for structure. Planting is predominantly white and purple, with many varieties chosen for scent. The garden includes seating areas to catch the morning and evening sun. One of many local foxes has taken up residence on the comfortable corner sofa at the end of the garden. You might well catch sight of him as he seems quite fearless. At No. 65 we moved from a large country garden and had professional help designing and planting in 2021. After 3 years of tending and adjusting we feel we can now call it our own.  We have incorporated traditional favourites roses, jasmine, iris and salvias and introduced more contemporary grasses, acers, cercis and canas. Our seating areas enjoy both sun and natural shade. The dining area sits perfectly below an overhanging silver birch. The landscaping is modern and angular but overflowing plants soften these lines.
