About Old Balloo House & Barn

Daffodil days
Snowdrops may be the traditional welcome to the gardening year but daffodils, en masse, can really lift the spirits in the spring. They have been planted in hundreds here, around the house and barn, in pots and borders but especially in the fields, under trees and among the grass, where they look their best. There are daffodils to suit every garden! The soil at Balloo is thin and stony (not ideal) and some do better than others – as a result of this (and the weather) every season brings surprises. They start in February with mainly yellows of various kinds: February Gold, Dutch Master, Golden Harvest, Topolino and Tete a Tete; progress through mainly whites, creams and bi-colours: among them are Early Bride, Mount Hood, Thalia, White Lion and Jack Snipe; and finish in late April to early May with Actaea, Pueblo, Misty Glen and Hawera. There are tall traditional types, cyclamineus, jonquils, doubles and miniatures. We introduce new varieties every year.
