About Pen y Bryn
Pen y Bryn is a garden of two halves: the upper gardens to the right of the drive and the woodland to the left. We moved in in February 2020 and have been working on creating the gardens since then.
The upper gardens consist of a more formal planting setting with a rose bed and five larger herbaceous borders. There is a pond, productive area of the garden with organic, no-dig veg and fruit beds, greenhouse, potting shed and compost bins. There are also two areas that are being left to wildflowers under the old apple trees – we are in year two and waiting for the yellow rattle to take hold and allow the other wildflower seeds to take. There are several seating areas spread around the garden/woodland to enjoy the views of the black mountains.
On the opposite side of the house there is a small courtyard garden where the less hardly plants are show cased.
To the front of the property there is a gravel bed and several, smaller, herbaceous beds.
The Woodland is half an acre which graduates from a slope to the level. In the last couple of years (after years of neglect) several large old, diseased trees have been removed offering more light into the area. This is now being sensitively redeveloped to offer pathways with pockets of planting interest, pond and marginal planting plus and tea house ( WIP). The planting is loosely based on a Japanese theme and the colours in this area have been limited to give a sense of calm.
Many of the tree trunks, large branches have been placed around the garden to either build retaining walls or steps. We love to recycle throughout the garden so nothing goes to waste.
Spring Interest – Rhododendrons, bluebells, geraniums, primroses, alliums
Summer Interest – Lavender, tall herbaceous perennial’s, roses
Autumn Interest – Hydrangeas, grasses, salvia
