About Riverside Cottage
Whilst the land has been in Billa’s family for over 100 years, we only moved here in 2006, since when we have been gradually adapting and remodeling the orchard and nut plat, previously used for vegetables and poultry. A rose & clematis pergola has replaced an ancient apple tree, collapsed through over-abundant fruiting, with more light and sun for the soft fruit nearby, and following some adjustments to the steep slope we now have annual and perennial flower and shrub beds. It is still an evolving garden, and we continue to plant masses of bulbs, snowdrops and old varieties of daffs, Spanish bluebells and hybrids (for which we blame the Victorian ancestors) and whistling jacks, primroses, purple honesty forget-me-nots and foxgloves which all seem at home here. The wildlife pond, started in Spring 2016, is coming on well. We have been restoring the original cottage garden with its combination of flowers and herbs. We were filmed in ’23 for Gardener’s World, but we don’t know if & when we will be featured.
