About The Garden of the Wind at Middle Hunt House

The Garden of the Wind at Middle Hunt House is based on a modern design made by the owners over the last 20 years. Particular care has been given to landscaping the site for long term development. It is becoming known as a good example of modern design as the planting matures. The design has been made to show off the far reaching views over the Black Mountains.

The Ardizzone Sensory and Sculpture parterre garden is dedicated to the memory of Nicholas Ardizzone, Antoinetta’s first husband who died in 2004, consists of 12 beds each with a small number of complementary plants in each bed designed to provide an extended season.

The site is at 600 feet above sea level and is exposed to westerly winds. We have to work with the wind hence the name of the garden. Despite the height, many tender pants are successfully grown. The bespoke architecturally designed greenhouse, potting shed in the fountain court was completed in 2010 which helps the owners propagate and raise new plants. A woodland edge garden was planted in 2012. A water rill was installed on the parterre in 2017 with a fountain head and two fountain pools along its length. The farmhouse was linked to an adjacent building by a unique architecturally designed bridge which received two RIBA awards in 2019. A wild flower garden and a willow bower was planted in 2020 and in 2023 the pond margin was planted with water loving plants, all in the Art & Memory field . A 1.5 acre adjacent field is in development as an arboretum.
