The Long Barn

Beautiful informal garden with ha-ha creating infinity views across ancient parkland. Strong Mediterranean influence with plenty of seating in large paved courtyard under pollarded plane trees. Unusual wall-sheltered group of four venerably gnarled olive trees, figs and vines, then herbaceous borders, tiered lawns merging northwards into woodland garden. Walks through parkland to the River Tas - serene.

About The Long Barn

Our garden is an attempt at creating ‘memory rooms’ and distant views recalling places important to us all the way from childhood to recent times, which continues to evolve. Yet it also serves as a playground and kind of holiday home for the children and, one day, grandchildren.
There’s a rather lovely merging of old woodland (with many old yews) into curated garden and despite the use of hard landscaping around the house we have tried to retain informality throughout which feels very right for a barn conversion.
It’s a delight to find peace and calm and beauty in our surroundings and if these can also remind us of special places, people and events from our past then that is doubly fulfilling.
I’m sorry this isn’t a list of plants or features (although the Haha! we are utterly thrilled with), but instead an effort at explaining what we have tried to do, but we hope you’ll come at least to enjoy the exquisite home made cakes on a beautiful summer’s day. We also very much hope you’ll enjoy our garden.
Lots of seating in courtyard under pollarded plane trees, or around pool. Very Mediterranean! Teas and cakes served from veranda overlooking lawns and parkland.
