About The Old Vicarage, Ruishton
The Old Vicarage (not open) is set in an acre of grounds on the edge of the village, overlooking farmland. The current owners have lived here for 11 years and view the garden as a garden in progress. On entering the gates the Irish Yew planted in around 1840 at the same time as the house was built, dominates the Victorian planting of the original garden and old orchard, enhanced by the newly designed driveway. The surprise of the intimate fountain garden built in 2015 catches your eye as you turn the corner.
Behind the house the real work reveals itself. The old glebe field has been transformed from nettles and brambles to a formal garden framed by paths, a terrace and rope roses and a wisteria arch. The gardens lead through a yew hedge with the vegetable garden, espalier fruit trees, greenhouse and cut flower beds behind.
Walking across the glebe lawn reveals the new wildlife garden and pond. Originally so densely covered with nettles and hogweed that it couldn’t be entered, now has a new wildlife pond, native hedge, willow trees and meadow plants for the bees and butterflies.
