About Toft Green Farm
The garden is 10 years old. Many trees and sheds had to be removed as Toft Green had been a working farm. Fruit trees and established old trees remained. The plan has changed and developed over the years as the garden took shape. Many buckets of brick ends and stones had to be carried and top soil added to establish a fertile garden.
A particular challenge was the old farmyard and midden. The soil was very poor and shallow. Improvements and changes have been necessary to accommodate the lack of soil. An ornamental fish pond was set in the midden area with a gravel garden alongside.
The herbaceous beds are continually being widened to allow extra planting.
The wild garden to the east was originally a cattle field. It now has a wild life pond, mown paths, fruit trees, native trees and the beginnings of a wild flower area.
A recent addition has been a greenhouse which has helped with propagation and overwintering as well as looking lovely.
It has been encouraging and rewarding to see the garden take shape and we feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity to watch plants flourish and develop alongside the inevitable failures!
