Tommys Farm

1½ acre garden with views over Boars Hill. Since move to Tommys Farm in 2013, we have tackled the ivy which had made the dry stone walls collapse, planted over 30 trees, beech hedges, mixed native hedge, created a productive vegetable garden with greenhouse, a formal box parterre, south facing patio with flower garden, orchard and shrubbery.

About Tommys Farm

Tommys Farm has incredibly stony and neutral to alkaline sandy soil. Each time we dig a planting hole another wheelbarrow of limestone is excavated! All garden waste is shredded and composted on site mixed with manure from a local farm and then it is used to improve the soil.

We have had success with mediterranean plants such as lavender, salvias, penstemons, sedums, bearded iris, helianthus Lemon Queen, choisia, ceanothus, erigeron, snowdrops & daffodils. We are experimenting with companion planting in the vegetable beds to encourage the beneficial insects & for visual appeal.

We have planted over 30 trees including limes, 2 elms resistant to Dutch elm disease, field maples, cherries, robinia, walnuts, Lebanese cedar and Scots pine.
