About White Cottage & Nursery
The garden which has been developed over 40 years mainly from a field, has an open aspect with many areas of interest flowing from one into another There are many specimen trees but the garden is dominated by a huge weeping willow which has been growing for 60 years. The formal area of garden is enclosed on three sides by a hornbeam hedge with a lily pond in the centre and herbaceous and shrub borders either side. The colour scheme in this area ranges through purple to pale pinks.
The area beyond the Hornbeam is edged on two sides by deep herbaceous borders and a shrub bed. There are three large island beds containing mixed plantings of shrubs and herbaceous plants. A gravel bed is a new addition with grasses and a stumpery.
To the far side is a stream garden with bog beds and looking beyond is a small wild flower meadow which in the early spring is carpeted with snakes head fritillary, cowslips, primroses and miniature daffodils.
A further feature of the garden is the large variety of mature, interesting and unusual trees and shrubs including, Magnolia ‘Leonard Messel’, Viburnum mariesii, Parrotia persica, Catalpa bignonoides ‘Aurea’ and Nyssa sylvatica, Taxodium distichum, Acer ‘October Glory’, Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Casque Rouge’ and many more.
Walking through the small orchard brings you to the rose garden with an unusual fountain feature before arriving to the rockery which contains many hardy geraniums and alpine flora. Around the garden are sculptures from Zimbabwe and a few humorous touches!!
