About Woodside, Killerby

Woodside is set in 12 acres of which 2 acres have been developed into garden in stages over the last few years. The remaining ten acres wrap around the property comprising fields and 2 paddocks. The owner had a stroke 32 years ago and worked full time until 3 years ago, yet has designed all elements of the garden and completed the works mostly single handed. Many of the plants have been grown from seed or taken from cuttings.
The garden has a number of features including a large prairie bed comprising grasses and autumn perennials which attract numerous bees and butterflies, spring woodland bed,bog garden, rose garden with box and lavender hedging, fruit trees, woods complete with rookery and wildlife pond where moorhens have nested the last two years The main beauty of Woodside lives in its many trees, over one hundred ranging from British native trees to conifers, himalayan birch, cherry trees which cover the lawn in white blossom in May, redwood and monkey puzzle. The owner continues to add to these. The garden is designed to show colour in different areas through all four seasons. The wide use of grasses extends interest into the winter months, creates movement on Woodside’s exposed windy site and leads the eye from formal garden to field. The garden attracts a wealth of wildlife and one challenge has been to balance the demands of nature’s guests with garden design. There are several seating areas and the garden sits on one level though the woods and paddocks have uneven ground.
Part of one paddock has been converted into a vegetable and cut flowers garden comprising raised beds and a polytunnel. From here the owner runs social and therapeutic horticultural therapy for adults with physical disability and long term conditions.
