36 Alma Grove

A secluded cottage garden right in the heart of London mixing edibles, pollinator friendly planting, annuals and perennials in flower and raised beds. Space saving options for composting, a pond, potting shed and greenhouse, and multiple water containers allowing this small garden (10 x 10 metres) to do much more than its size suggests.

About 36 Alma Grove

This is a young garden all landscaped and planted within the last three years. Hopefully, it shows how much can be done in such a short time (and by those with little or no prior gardening experience, with a little help from Gardeners’ World).

This garden aims to feed people and pollinators. We use the raised beds to grow vegetables and we try to make the most of every other space too – from edible borders filled with chives, sage and thyme, to benches underplanted with strawberries.

The design combines a formal layout, with symmetrical raised beds and brick paths around a central pond, with sinuous curved borders and cottage planting made up mainly of easy-to-grow annuals and native perennials and shrubs. The space saving potting shed provides another angle from which to view the garden when rain stops play.

The central London location and sheltered spot means the garden tends to stay warm over winter and flowers early.
