About Saling Hall
Saling Hall was a well known and loved Essex National Garden Scheme garden across the 1970s-2000s under the ownership of Hugh & Judy Johnson but has not been open since 2011. The garden is currently mid-way through a multi-year programme of refurbishment and new tree plantings, with the current owners keen to open to the NGS in 2023 to then allow repeat visitors to enjoy the evolution of this beautiful and significant garden.
Saling Hall itself is a 1699-built Grade II* listed manor house and has a Grade II listed ornamental walled garden immediately adjacent to the house. The 12 acre garden itself is Grade II listed as a Registered Park & Garden of Special Historic Interest.
The majority of the garden comprises a large park surrounding the house, with various water features. The park is for the most part an arboretum, housing a collection of rare and unusual trees, primarily planted since the 1970s; there are many new plantings of particularly rare items which already add significant interest to the other now-mature trees. As you can imagine, autumn colour is excellent, varied and at times breathtaking.
There is plenty more to see in the garden beyond the thousands of special trees: a new orchard, a kitchen garden overlooking the beautiful village church, a wildflower meadow with beehives, a Japanese garden, an oak glade and an interesting water garden.
Saling Hall is a garden for visitors to enjoy year after year as the ambitious programme of work yields its full potential.
