About The Black Farmer at West Kitcham Farm
On moving to West Kitcham back in 1999, along with extensive works on the farmhouse, the garden was landscaped to provide low maintenance beds and plenty of lawn for our young children to play. Twenty years on, we are now developing the garden to maximise the beds with interesting planting – which gives a nod to our changing climate – with year round interest and colour. We want the garden to be a jewel in the midst of open farmland and extensive, beautiful views from almost every part of the garden including across to the historic town of Launceston and its ancient castle.
This really is a work in progress, but offers much to see and enjoy. Particular successes have been the nursery wildflower beds and woodland area. Here nature is prominent with walkways through the long waves of grass left to grow for all types of wildlife to hide. Amongst the long grass is a small orchard with various local variety fruit trees. The newly established wildflower meadow boasts cornflowers and poppies, yellow rattle and much more. The little copse has native trees and plants that are at home on the woodland floor. A lovely shady place for a hot sunny day.
Inspired by Wilfred’s childhood allotment the small vegetable garden is an exciting area full of tasty ‘less ordinary’ products. A favourite spot to enjoy the view and a few peas straight from the pod!
